First up, congrats to Erin and Nufagus, winners of the first Daily Mojo DVD competition. Your copies of ‘Step Brothers’ are on their way. Thanks to all those who posted comments. Hopefully we will feature a few more competitions in the near future.
Here’s a couple of quick notes before I bang out some lengthier posts today:
* Movie Going:
With the Oscars only a week away, I’ve still got a fair few screenings to make in order to formulate my opinions for my annual Oscars predictions post. Will be posting two reviews on ‘Milk’ and ‘Doubt’ today. Lined up for this week: ‘The Changeling’, ‘The Reader’, ‘The Wrestler’ and ‘Frost/Nixon’. Can’t wait.
* The King of Kong:
Had this on my Quickflix list for months and finally got a chance to check it out yesterday. I won’t have time to write a Rewind post on it, but if you enjoy a) documentaries b) video games or c) studies of competitive nature (or like me, all of the above), ‘The King of Kong’ is required viewing. It follows a mano a mano battle for the world record score of Donkey Kong between two very disparate competitors. Thoroughly entertaining and suprisingly funny and tender.
* Aussie Ladette to Lady:
Definitely the trashiest of my TV viewing guilty pleasures. The contrast of the pious voiceover and attitude of the teachers with the dubious actions of the producers (constantly plying the ladettes with alcohol) makes for strangely hilarious TV. Principal Hardcore’s (a Freudian slip made by one of the previous ladettes) over pronunciation of every word is just a delight. I also love how they toss in one blokey girl each season who is clearly not a drunken slapper just so they can do the ‘ugly duckling to swan’ routine. It’s pretty obvious from the editing that Skye is going to be the Louise of this season. If watching TV this bad is wrong, I don’t want to be right.
* Vince Colosimo – Customs
A blatant UK rip off of ‘Border Security’, rebranded with Vince Colosimo’s voice over and oddly, his name right above the title. I love Vince Colosimo, but the over emphasis of his input to the show is a bit strange. I mean, why not go the whole hog and call it Vince Colosimo’s Customs. I kept picturing him sitting in front of a bank of tv screens, monitoring various international airports whilst stroking his chin, then picking up a telephone and asking the the ground staff at Gatwick Airport to check out the suspicious looking bag on Carousel 8.
