A bit late on posting this due to a short Easter break, but for those who didn’t catch it here’s actor Billy Bob Thornton’s bizarre appearance on Canadian radio/webcast broadcaster QTV.
What a petulant, arrogant asshole. He took offense that he felt he was being described as a musical hobbyist and that they had ignored his request to make no mention of his movie career so he tried to submarine the interview, conveniently ignoring the hypocrisy that his movie career is what gets them on the air in the first place. QTV Host Jian Ghomeshi deserves a medal for trying to keep the interview on track, and points out that the reference to his other career rightfully gives context to his appearance. It’s not like Ghomeshi wanted to spend five minutes discussing Karl Chidlers. Thornton comes off as a major tool and his defense that they ignored his request to not mention his other career is ridiculous.
I feel sorry for the other guys in his band who have the shell-shocked look of children watching their parents fight over something moronically trivial.
Here’s Jian Ghomeshi reiterating his position and rightfully questioning Thornton’s defense:
“Our policy is that we don’t allow anybody to tell us what we can and cannot say. Beyond that, it was this notion and the language that he used during the interview that I thought was unfortunate, that we were ‘instructed’ to say this and that. And I think that does raise interesting questions about ideas around how much journalism is to be controlled, especially when it comes to arts and entertainment and culture, and I think that that’s a concern. The reality is, and I tried to explain this in the interview, these guys have only been together for two years. You just don’t get the kind of national press they are getting without the incentive being something like his career past. And I think if he could graciously accept that and say, ‘Hey, I want to focus on the music, but I get that the reason we’re here is because I’m a movie star that’s won an Oscar.’ There’s not a lot of people who can say that.”
