The Swell Season, the musical lovechild of Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova from the film ‘Once’, are back with a new album entitled ‘Strict Joy’. Thanks to NPR, I just listened to the album from start to finish and as expected it’s another melodic, tender gem. Though Glen and Marketa are no longer together as a couple, the chemistry of their vocal harmonies is still perfect. Their performance at the Opera House earlier this year was one of my favourite live acts of the year.
Stand-out tracks for me were the album opener ‘Low Rising’, ‘High Horses’ and the achingly sad ballad ‘Back Broke’ (which I remembered vividly from the Opera House show). If you love gentle indie-folk with an overflowing heart, you should head here right now for an exclusive first listen of Glen and Marketa’s new album, ‘Strict Joy’, available until the album’s official release on October 27.
