A very natural, engaging comedic drama following an American man and French woman’s return to her native Paris after a European holiday. Adam Goldberg is excellent as Jack, an American struggling to deal with the cultural differences and the constant evasion of the local’s use of their native French. Delpy channels an ‘Annie Hall’-era Diane Keaton with her self-deprecating sense of humour and empathetic protagonist.

Definitely one of Woody Allen's best. Inventively humorous and heartfelt. Unforgettable characters and performances by each of the main players. A well deserved Best Picture winner.

Before The Devil Knows You're Dead
8/10
Gritty, affecting, beautifully shot drama. Performances so real the film almost felt like a documentary at times. Sidney Lumet still at the top of his game at age 84!

Capturing the Friedmans (2003)
8/10
A fascinating documentary about the nature of truth and memory from the perspective of a family broken by the worst possible accusations of impropriety. It's intentional ambiguity forces you to question the veracity of every person interviewed.

Gentle, slow-moving character drama with genuine performances and a sweet but not saccharine theme of unity.

Eraserhead (1977)

Got so much more from watching the digitally remastered DVD. My first viewing of this was more than ten years ago on crappy VHS. The imagery and sound editing have far greater effect with the new clarity. I also never realised how intentionally funny Lynch plays some of the scenes. If you love Lynch, you have to love this film.

Mostly engaging vignettes on life and love in Paris. More hit than miss. The Coen's part and Alfonso Cuaron's are particularly well-made. Impeccably shot.

Scaphandre et le papillon, Le (2007)
8/10
You would need a heart of stone not to be moved by this story. A heartbreaking, fascinating story of a man trapped inside his own body. Amazing cinematography by Kaminski, a well-deserved best director nom for Julian Schnabel.
